Berea, OHIO — Cleveland Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur, not only is dealing with a new owner walking around training camp, but now is faced with his first major injury to his football team.
Starting outside linebacker Chris Gocong is out for the season, after rupturing his Achilles tendon in his right ankle Saturday morning in full team workouts.
“It looked like, from what we could tell, he just jumped up in the air, and then came down on it so we’re having it evaluated”, Shurmur said while addressing the media.
The injury happened while Gocong was covering tight end Jordan Cameron in the end zone during a red zone drill. Gocong immediately fell down and clutched his right leg. The Browns medical staff rushed to his aid and carted him off the field.
Shurmur finished the practice on a high note saying, “I think we have enough veteran guys around here, and quite frankly anybody that’s come to our team has played enough football where they’ve seen injuries happen. It’s the unintended consequence of this game. I thought they bounced back fine.”
Gocong, 28, starting all 32 games for Cleveland since being acquired from Philadelphia in a trade in April 2010, signed a three year $16.8 million contact extention last September.
